Cleaning your play couch: a guide

Cleaning your play couch: a guide

Let's face it. Kids can be dirty. Walk into any house with a toddler and look beneath the cushions and you'll find crushed Cheerios (or Goldfish) and possibly the odd drool patch or milk stain. Probably some pen or sticker residue too. One amazing benefit to having kids hang out on their play couch (instead of your regular sofa), is that they can be cleaned. Here is a step-by-step guide to clean  your play couch.

Step 1:  Begin by unzipping the covers from the play couch. If the zipper sliders are tucked too far in to the zipper pockets that you cannot remove them with your fingers, use a paper clip to latch on to the zipper slider and gently pull to unhide it from the pocket.

Step 2: Once the covers are removed, we recommend you close the zippers before washing them. This precautionary step helps prevent any potential damage to the zippers during the washing process.

Step 3: Wash separately in cold water. Using cold water helps preserve the color and integrity of the fabric. Your regular detergent is fine, but avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the fabric and affect the colors. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the appropriate amount of detergent to use.

Step 4: Air dry with the zippers open after washing for quickest dry time. This allows for proper airflow and helps prevent any moisture buildup that can lead to mold or mildew. Avoid using a dryer or exposing the covers to direct sunlight, as this can cause shrinkage or fading. It may take a few hours or longer for the covers to dry completely, depending on the fabric and environmental conditions. We find if we wash them in the evening that they are dry by morning.

Step 5: Cleaning the waterproof liners (optional). The play couch come with waterproof liners that protect the foam interior from spills and accidents. These liners typically do not require frequent cleaning, but if you feel the need to freshen them up, you can follow the same instruction as above for the exterior covers (cold wash, hang to dry).

Step 6: Put the covers back on. Once the covers and liners are completely dry, it's time to reassemble your play couch. Insert the foam cushions back into the covers and zip them securely. Make sure everything is aligned and fitted correctly. Line the seams on the fabric up with the edges of the foam for the perfect fit. Tuck the zipper sliders back into the pockets to prevent zippers from scratching up the floors or walls or from little ones getting into the foam.

Now, your play couch is clean, fresh, and ready to be enjoyed once again!

For more regular maintenance, a lint brush or quick vacuum will do the trick when washing is not required. Microsuede is a great fabric for play couches as the friction in the fabric allows the cushions stay in place for builds. That friction can also attract dust and dirt so keeping your environment clean as possible will ensure your play couch stays clean too.
